Small Honest Improvements Change Lives
Small Improvements, Repeated Honestly: The Art of Compound Change.
The human mind is often fascinated by the charm of a quantum leap, the one and only heroic act that is destined to change a person overnight. It is the training to appreciate the big gesture and the instant transformation that we are conditioned to admire. Nevertheless, the architectural integrity of a well-lived life can hardly be the product of a sudden upheaval. In its turn, it is ruled by a deeper, less vocal rule: "Small improvements, done with honesty, will transform entire lives."
The weight of this philosophy can only be perceived by going beyond the superficiality of the hacks and venturing into the world of behavioral compounding. We have the delicate stories to tie our reality in at The Insight Thread. We are looking today at the reasons why the quest to be monumental is many times a cause of stagnation and why the quest to be incremental is many times a cause of mastery.
The Paralysis of Grandiosity: The Failure of Radical Changes:
When trying to achieve excellence, the Intensity Fallacy happens so easily to us. Our perception is that in order to solve a serious problem, we have to use a serious force. This misconception of systemic equilibrium in a doctoral sense. When we radically change our path - be it in health, intellectual activity, or a professional field - we are rung by a psychological homeostatic alarm.
The Friction of Over-Ambition:
The sub-problems that pertain to this grandiosity are many:
Cognitive Overload: Trying to assimilate various high-stakes changes concurrently overloads the prefrontal cortex, resulting in executive dysfunction.
The Shame Spiral: When a radical ambition is bound to fail, the cognitive dissonance thereof leads to an experience of failure, and attempts to do the same are discouraged.
Sustainability Deficit: Intensity is a limited resource; it is the sprint, which does not see the marathon of existence.
In our Welcome to The Insight Thread post, we mentioned that we have to see the patterns we form in our daily life to find the thread of truth. Assuming that the pattern is that of burnout, the thread is going to break at some point.
The Architecture of the Honest Increment:
What is needed is the Honest Increment. This is not a step at all, but an action of being able to repeat honestly - to do it fully present, in a morally responsible manner towards oneself. In the day-to-day activities, this would equate to a complete simplification of intent.
Incremental change can be implemented through strategies of incremental change:
Micro-Habit Calibration:> Rather than devoting oneself to the goal of mastering a language, devote oneself to the task of honestly translating one sentence. This lowers the activation energy needed in order to start the process.
The Integrity Loop: Honesty in this situation implies an absence of judgment regarding what you are able to do at this moment. You have nothing to give 1 percent to-day but give it with your heart.
Temporal Anchoring: Add a little improvement to an already existing ritual. This involves the brain with its already formed neural systems to frame new, productive behaviors upon.
Original Insight: In my personal experience as a student, I used to have the sense that the task of writing a dissertation did not become any less daunting when I would write a chapter, but it became slightly easier through the sheer responsibility of going through and polishing one footnote per day. That little, recurrent rigor, ultimately formed the intellectual framework of the whole work. It made me understand that excellence is not a place, but a criterion of care and consideration given to the smallest unit of work.
The Power of Consistency Compounded.
When we sincerely admit a little progress we have made, we pass from the place of doing to the place of becoming. In mathematics. This is no mere formula, but is a metaphor for the human spirit. An increase of 1 percent in daily result produces in a version of you almost 38 times your present power at the year-end.
This is what the Insight Thread is doing: the discovery that your future is not some faraway land that you will arrive at with one trip, but a piece of you is making with each little, good decision you are making today.
Which is one of your micro-improvements that you have made today, in complete honesty, and how has it changed your outlook?
