Mind Duality Concept
The Alchemy of Stillness: Why the Deepest Truths are Waiting on the Silence.
The best things are learned when you quit beating around the bush.
We have been conditioned in a world where hyper-productivity and commodification of our attention are the order of the day to think that the human mind is a linear machine, a processor that will provide results in direct relation to the amount of cognitive force applied. We approach problem-solving as a battle; we push at the gates of a quandary with reason and perseverance, and believe that the harder we work, the harder the epiphany will give in. This Hustle culture of the mind presupposes that cognitive throughput is a game of sheer survival, but this paradigm does not take into consideration the biological and psychological precondition of actual genius-hood.
But, as all the old soldiers of intellectual and creative trenches know, the most elusive answers-the answers that one gives-are the ones that one gives out of the blue sky, the Aha! instances which change our paradigms radically are seldom born in the very middle of the fight. They are the offspring of the so-called Incubation Period that has been effectively studied in the field of cognitive science, in which the subconscious mind keeps working on a problem, yet in the process, the conscious mind is occupied with repose. This dormant state is not a cessation of work, but a refocusing into a more flowing form of wholesale processing, which is not subject to the hard-and-fast restrictions of the conscious ego.
The Forcing Cognitive Architecture.
When we forcibly get an answer, we put the prefrontal cortex in high-beta wave activity. It is the sphere of analytical rigour, executive functioning, and working on something. Although this is a necessary condition of the performance of known procedures, it is necessarily reductive. It works as a process of elimination, and the thought that is irrelevant to the task is discarded in order to remain on task. Such extreme attention is a spotlight: it is so bright in the middle that it clouds the edges, namely, the area where non-linear relationships are concentrated.
We form a cognitive bottleneck by pushing ourselves relentlessly towards reaching a conclusion. Such hyper-focus activates the sympathetic nervous system, which causes a mild stress reaction that further narrows our perceptual field. We fall into a state of functional fixedness where we can only observe things and concepts in the conventional ways. We do not allow the Default Mode Network (DMN), the creative powerhouse of the brain, to go online. It is only after we release the grip of the "force" that the DMN can start connecting the threads of memory, experience and logic together in a new way that makes sense.
The Paradox of the Effortless.
This surrender has a great historical background. Since Archimedes and his bathtub, the most important breakthroughs in history were made when people were in a state of diffuse thinking, as it happened with Kekulé and his Ouroboros dream. This, in fact, is the irony of effortless: it is the most complicated issues that may need a certain amount of complete noninvolvement to solve. When we cease to demand an answer, we are telling our nervous system that the threat of the unsolved problem has come to a close. Within this condition, the brain is at liberty to make experiments with low-probability associations, the crazy, unorthodox ideas that we would otherwise reject as illogical in a forced brainstorming session.
More so, compelling usually arises out of fear of the unknown. We desire the answer not only because it is useful, but to understand the uneasiness of not knowing. When we put more importance on solving the discomfort than on the quality of the revelation, we end up with what is the most logical solution rather than the best solution. Real intellectual profundity demands the Negative Capability of the poet John Keats, which consists in the power to abide in uncertainties, mysteries, and doubt, without intolerant groping at the truth and logic.
Between Analytical Rigour and Applied Wisdom.
We believe that wisdom is more than the gathering of data, which is what we contend at The Insight Thread. The quote that is the core of the current reflection makes us remember that clarity could be one of the products of abandonment. It is not an invitation to intellectual laziness and the denial of hard work, but an invitation to a higher kind of intellectual training: a higher training in stepping aside. It is the understanding that the labour of the mind consists of two stages: the active collecting of the threads and the passive weaving of the tapestry.
When you are in the middle of a complicated professional career change, a broken relationship, or a creative block, think that you might have already compiled the required information. You have your mental library filled, and you are too near the shelves to read the titles. The forcing is not value adding anymore; it is making noise, like a radio that is playing by changing stations. It is the noise of your toil that is silencing your intuition.
The Insight Thread in Motion: Your Reflective Practice.
We are forced to learn how to cultivate a moment of deliberate non-activity to put this abstract principle into concrete growth. We have to stop thinking of resting as a type of recovery, but rather begin to think about it as a type of asynchronous processing.
The Tactical Disengagement: Determine what problem are you actively forcing. Clearly, allow yourself to give it up over a period of time. This is not resting but rather a purposely planned handover of the conscious mind to the subconscious mind. It can be a walk with no podcasts, an hour of deep meditation, or a full night of restful sleep. You will have to make sure that the level of stimulus is low enough to trigger the DMN (Default Mode Network).
Subconscious Prompt: Do not walk off without first putting the problem in the form of a soft question and not a desperate plea. What are the invisible variables that may be involved here? and not that of a narrow solution. This shows the subconscious without the prefrontal cortex stressed.
The Journaling Loop: The revelations that come when there is stillness are usually very short-lived. As the epiphany sometimes actually comes to pass, usually in the shower, commuting or in that interlude between waking and sleep, seize upon it at once. Look back upon what state of mind you were in when it came. You will have guessed it was something of a fluent slumbersomeness--an easy stance and a watchful waiting head.
Closing Reflection
It is only then that we will begin to look at silence as the space and view it as the most important canvas on which we can make our brightest realisations. The fibre of intuition is fine; when forced a little too much, it breaks. Relinquish the force, put your faith in the gigantic machinations of your subconscious and leave the thread to snare its own course along the needle. Your solution is right before you, not evading you; it is simply awaiting that you can shut up and listen to it.
